Issued: Friday, 11 Augsut 2023, 11:00 UTC

Typhoon LAN developed south of Japan in the past days. Currently, the typhoon has sustained wind speeds of 210 kph, with gusts up to 260 kph, and a central pressure of 936 hPa. On its northwesterly trajectory, LAN is expected to make landfall on the main island of Japan in the coming days.

11.08.2023

On August 06, 2023, a low-pressure area far south of Japan developed, maturing into a tropical disturbance over the warm waters of the Pacific. Moving northwestwards into a region, favorable for the development of tropical cyclone, LAN quickly intensified and reached Typhoon strength on August 10, 2023. In the past 24 hours, the storm intensified rapidly into a severe Typhoon with sustained winds of 210 kph and wind gusts up to 260 kph. The central pressure of the system dropped to 936 hPa.

At the moment, the storm is on a northwestwards trajectory, moving at around 11 kph towards the main island of Japan. Early next week, the landfall of Typhoon LAN is expected. The Typhoon is expected to weaken before making landfall, as it moves over cooler waters, nevertheless LAN is expected to retain Typhoon strength. Upon landfall, LAN will bring severe winds and torrential downpours to Japan. Within a 48 h-period, up to 300 mm of rain can fall in the regions directly affected by the typhoon. Due to the complex terrain, landslides and river flooding must be expected. Currently, models suggest that the typhoon will likely make landfall between Osaka and Nagoya, though a direct hit of both metropolitan areas cannot be excluded.
