IOTA has intensified to Category 4 with wind speeds of 230 kph and gusts up to 275 kph. It will make landfall in Puerto Cabezas (Nicaragua) around Tuesday 04 UTC. Rainfall amounts of 500 mm/72h possible.

IOTA is the sixth Major Hurricane of the Atlantic hurricane season 2020 (current record: 7 Major Hurricanes in 2005) and the latest Major Hurricane since LENNY, 1999.
The system is currently moving west at a displacement speed of about 17 kph. Landfall is expected on Tuesday at about 04 UTC in the area of the port city of Puerto Cabezas.
With 35,000 inhabitants, it is the second largest city on the Caribbean coast of Nicaragua. A weakening of the system until landfall is not expected.
In addition to destructive wind speeds, precipitation intensities of up to 150 mm/3h can be expected in northern Nicaragua. Total precipitation of up to 500 mm can be reached.
In addition, waves of up to 9 m height are to be expected. Floods and landslides in the mountains can occur. For Puerto Cabezas a high degree of destruction is expected.

Hurricane IOTA will intensify to Category 4 and make landfall in northern Nicaragua. Gusts up to 250 kph and rainfall amounts of 500 mm/72h possible.

IOTA is the 30th named storm of the Atlantic Hurricane Season 2020. It is the 13th hurricane of the season and will be the second major hurricane of November (after ETA).
With water temperatures of about 29°C in the Caribbean Sea and an area of low vertical wind shear, hurricane IOTA is likely to intensify rapidly. While the storm will belong
to category 2 with sustained mean winds of almost 150 kph, the system will have already intensified to a category 4 hurricane with wind speeds of up to 220 kph by the evening
of tomorrow, Monday. The landfall in northern Nicaragua is expected to be at maximum intensity. Devastating precipitation of up to 500 mm/72h may also occur.
