After an unseasonably cool start to the winter season, a significant snowpack was built up at higher elevations of the German hills in Southern Germany. The snowpack is mobilized currently leading to significant flooding in Southern Germany.
In Bavaria, the record snowfall event in the first days of December left up to 50 cm of snow even in the lower elevations in the southern part of the state. Due to a much milder synoptic set-up, the snowpack is currently mobilized and thawing quickly as temperatures rose above the 0 °ree; C-mark. Especially at smaller rivers feeding into the Danube in Bavaria significant river flooding is possible. At Passau, the Danube is expected to reach the 8-meter mark by Thursday, with slowly receding river levels afterward.
