Heat Wave
Europe

Issued: Wednesday, 03 August 2022, 09:30 UTC

The combination of a trough over the North Sea and a ridge across large parts of Europe reaching into Western Russia induces severe heat over Western and Central Europe.

03.08.2022

As the trough on the North Sea moves eastwards towards Scandinavia the advection of very warm air masses over Europe gets intensified. 850 hPa-temperatures will be reaching more than 20 °C over a widespread area, possibly close to the 25 °C-mark locally. Today, August 3, 2022, daytime maximum temperatures are expected to reach up to 40 °C in Southern France and up to 35 °C in Central Europe.

Thursday, August 04, 2022, the center of the heat wave is expected to shift eastwards over Central Europe as the cold front belonging to the surface low over the North Sea moves southeastwards. Daytime maximum temperatures are expected to reach more than 35 °C over large parts of Germany. Especially, in the lower regions in the south-western part of Germany temperatures close to the 40 °C-mark seem possible.

The cold front is expected to be accompanied with convective activity, both on Thursday and on Friday thunderstorms are expected to occur, shifting from Northern to Southern Germany in set timespan, possibly inducing severe weather. Only locally significant precipitation ought to be expected, as drought conditions are expected to further deteriorate in the coming days.

Heat Wave
Europe

Issued: Monday, 01 August 2022, 09:30 UTC

With an Iceland low and a ridge over Central and Western Europe very warm air masses advance eastwards over Europe causing the third heat wave of this summer season across Central Europe with temperatures likely reaching again above the 35 °C-mark.

01.08.2022

A relatively strong Iceland low and an intensifying ridge over Western and Central Europe leads to the advection of very warm air masses over Europe in the coming days. Beginning tomorrow, August 02, 2022, temperatures are expected to rise significantly.

As of tomorrow, 850 hPa-temperatures are expected to reach above the 15 °C-mark across the southern part of Central Europe, therefore at surface level daytime maximum temperatures are expected to reach above the 30 °C-mark. Temperatures are expected to rise further on Wednesday, August 03, 2022, and Thursday, August 04, 2022, with 850 hPa-temperatures reaching more than 20 °C over large parts France and Central Europe.

With the trough accompanied to the Iceland low, moving eastwards over the North Sea, the advection of very warm air masses is expected to intensify on Thursday, leading to 850 hPa-temperatures close to the 25 °C-mark ahead of the accompanied cold front. 850 hPa-temperature deviation is expected to reach more +10 K over Central Europe. On Thursday, daytime maximum temperatures are expected to reach well above the 35 °C-mark over large parts of Central Europe. Locally, temperatures close to or even reaching the 40 °C-mark in Central Europe seem feasible, as soils are continuing to be exceptionally dry.

On Friday, August 05, 2022, a cold front is expected to reach Central Europe, yet there is still some ambiguity in the numerical weather models how far the colder air masses will advance southward over Central Europe.
