Strong cold surge will affect large parts of east and middle europe with minimum temperatures between -15 and -30°C! The event takes place between 09 and 14 February, with a first highlight at the 11 February.
Very cold air is advected between a high pressure system over Scandinavia and low pressure systems from south France to south east europe from eastern Russia to
middle europe. In the continental dry air the temperature will fall in the night to Wednesday up to -25°C in larger areas from central and eastern Germany to Poland
and Czech. At day the temperature will lie in these areas under -10°C. In combination with the eastern wind the windchill temperature will be between -15 and -20°C.
Staying outside for extended periods of time at these temperatures without appropiate protection can result in frostbite! The peak of the cold wave will be reached on Thursday.
Then, low temperatures between -15 and -25°C are expected from southern Germany to Poland and local up to -30°C in eastern Germany and parts of Poland!
The cold spell with permafrost and daytime lows below -10°C is expected to last until at least Sunday 24 February.
