Typhoon FAXAI
Japan

Issued: Sunday, 08 September 2019, 19:00 CET

Typhoon FAXAI is heading towards Japan and is likely to make landfall in the Prefecture of Chiba. Also Japan's capital city Tokyo is concerned. Gusts up to 100 kph are possible.
07-09 September 2019

Taifun 14W FAXAI approaches Tokyo in the next few hours and has his landfall in the area of the city of Kanagawa or Chiba not far from Tokyo. This morning at 8 UTC the typhoon had a core pressure of 965 hPa and is shifting quite fast with a speed of 30 km/h towards north-northwest. Today at noon at 12 UTC FAXAI was classified in Category 3 with gusts of up to 100 kph (185 km/h). However, the typhoon has weakened in the last few hours and will continue to weaken. The typhoon is classified as category 1 or 2 during the landfall.

Due to the high displacement speed, less damage is likely to occur than in the case of DORIAN, although the metropolis of Tokyo is almost hit. Nevertheless, floods can occur in Tokyo and in Tokyo Bay and the surrounding area due to heavy rainfall (up to 200 mm within 12 hours). Landslides, power cuts and storm damage must also be expected.
